Secondary GCSE A-Level Adult Learners

Patient, qualified, and passionate about maths

I am a qualified teacher (QTS) with a background in Architecture (B.Arch.) and extensive experience teaching and tutoring GCSE and A-Level Maths. My academic and professional journey has given me a strong foundation in logical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication — skills that are essential for success in Maths.

I chose to teach because I genuinely enjoy helping students understand topics they once found difficult and watching their confidence grow. Many students come to me feeling unsure or anxious about Maths — my role is to help them feel supported, capable, and in control of their learning.

I am known for being patient, calm, and approachable, and I take time to understand how each student learns best. I believe that with the right guidance and encouragement, every student can make progress — whether the goal is to build confidence, close gaps in understanding, or aim for higher grades.

Parents can be assured that I teach in a structured, professional, and supportive manner, with a clear focus on the curriculum and exam expectations. I take pride in being reliable, well-prepared, and committed to each student's success.

I also currently teach GCSE and A-Level Maths at an adult education college, working with mature students returning to education — whether for career changes, university access courses, or personal development. This experience has made me even more adaptable as a tutor, comfortable working with learners of all ages and backgrounds.

Everything you need to know

Common questions from parents and students about how tutoring with Shaily works.

What inspired you to become a maths tutor?
I've always enjoyed Maths, especially problem-solving and logical thinking, which led me to study Architecture. Over time, I realised I didn't just enjoy using Maths — I truly enjoyed helping others understand it. My interest in private tutoring grew when I started working with GCSE and A-Level students one-to-one and saw how much difference personalised support made.
What levels and exam boards do you cover?
I teach Secondary (KS3), GCSE (Foundation and Higher), A-Level (AS and A2), and adult learners. My lessons are carefully planned around the curriculum, and I understand how exams are marked and what students need to succeed across all major exam boards.
How is the free introductory lesson structured?
The free 30-minute session is a chance for me to understand your child's current level, what they're finding difficult, and what their goals are. It's also an opportunity for the student to see if they feel comfortable with my teaching style. There's no obligation to continue.
What makes a good maths tutor?
A good tutor needs to be patient, approachable, and able to explain things clearly. Everyone learns differently, so it's important to adapt explanations and pace to suit the student. Building confidence is just as important as teaching content, especially in Maths.
Do you teach adult learners?
Yes! I currently teach GCSE and A-Level Maths at an adult education college. I work with mature students returning to education for career changes, university access courses, functional skills, or simply to build confidence with numbers. Adults are very welcome — I adapt my approach to suit your pace and goals.
Do you only teach online?
All 1:1 sessions are delivered online, which gives students the comfort of learning from home and makes scheduling much easier. For small group batch sessions, in-person options may be available — please get in touch to discuss.
How do batch / group sessions work?
Batch sessions are small groups of 3–6 students at the same level. Regular batches run weekly on a set schedule. Holiday intensives run as focused multi-day blocks during school breaks. Both offer a collaborative learning environment at a lower per-student cost.
